A fascia sign can have the right LEDs, clean returns and a first-rate vinyl finish, then still fail because its power supply was treated as an afterthought. The best waterproof drivers for signmaking are not simply the highest-IP units on the shelf. They are correctly sized 12V constant-voltage drivers, installed where heat and water cannot shorten their working life.

For sign makers, that distinction matters. A driver has to cope with the real conditions behind a tray, inside a letter set or near an external sign cabinet: temperature swings, condensation, cable entries and long daily operating hours. Choose it properly and the illumination stays even. Choose it badly and you risk flicker, dim modules, repeat visits and a job that costs more than it should.

What makes a driver right for an illuminated sign?

Most LED modules and standard LED strip used in sign fabrication require a 12V DC constant-voltage supply. The driver takes the incoming mains supply and delivers a regulated 12V output to the LEDs. That output voltage must match the LEDs exactly. A 24V driver is not an upgrade for a 12V module run - it is a fast route to damaged LEDs.

The word “waterproof” also needs a little trade-context. It generally refers to the driver enclosure and its IP rating, rather than a licence to place every connection in standing water. An IP-rated driver helps protect the electronics from dust and moisture, but glands, joints, connector choices and the position of the unit still decide whether the whole installation is weather-resistant.

For external lettering, tray signs and exposed locations, a sealed driver is usually the sensible starting point. For a dry, ventilated internal sign, an open-frame or non-waterproof supply may be suitable in the right enclosure, but there is rarely much value in making a service job harder to save a few pounds upfront.

How to choose the best waterproof drivers for signmaking

Start with the load, not the physical size of the driver. Add up the wattage of every LED module or metre of strip on that circuit. Manufacturers state module power per unit and strip power per metre, so the calculation is straightforward. Ten 1.2W modules create a 12W load. Five metres of 9.6W-per-metre strip creates a 48W load.

Then allow headroom. Running a driver flat out may work on day one, but it leaves little margin for heat, supply variation or the natural demands of a long-running sign. As a practical rule, aim to load a driver to around 80% of its rated capacity or less.

A 48W strip run therefore deserves at least a 60W driver, while a 60W or 75W unit may be the better call if the sign location is warm, enclosed or difficult to access. The smallest suitable driver is not always the best-value choice. A little spare capacity is cheap insurance against early failure.

Match voltage, then check current

At 12V, wattage and current are closely linked. Divide total wattage by 12 to find the approximate output current required. A 60W load needs 5A. This matters when selecting cable, connectors and how many feeds a circuit needs.

Do not assume a driver marked 60W can support any arrangement that totals 60W. Voltage drop becomes more noticeable as cable lengths increase, especially on larger signs with modules spread across a wide tray. The LEDs nearest the driver may look brighter than those at the far end. In that case, use suitable cable sizing and consider feeding the sign from more than one point rather than forcing all the current down one long run.

Choose an IP rating for the actual location

IP ratings are useful, but they need reading in plain English. The first digit relates to solid ingress such as dust; the second relates to water. An IP67 driver is a common, practical choice for sign applications because its sealed enclosure offers strong protection against dust and temporary immersion. That makes it well suited to outdoor environments and damp sign boxes.

It does not remove the need for sensible placement. Avoid locating the driver where water can collect around it, where it sits against a heat source, or where its cables enter a cabinet without proper protection. If the driver is inside a sign tray, mount it so it can be inspected and replaced without dismantling half the sign face.

Also check the operating temperature range on the specification. A driver mounted in direct summer sun within a dark aluminium tray may experience far more heat than the ambient outdoor temperature suggests. Heat is one of the main reasons drivers age early, so give the unit room and avoid burying it beneath insulation, foam or bundled cable.

The installation details that protect the driver

A quality waterproof driver cannot compensate for poor wiring. Keep the mains and low-voltage sides clearly separated, use correctly rated cable, and make connections in appropriate enclosures or with purpose-made sealed connectors where moisture is possible. Insulation tape around a joint is not a weatherproofing system.

Polarity matters on the 12V side. LED modules and strip are marked positive and negative, and reversing them can stop a circuit working or cause faults depending on the product. Before closing a tray or fitting the face, test the complete run at the driver output and at the furthest LED point.

Mains connection work must be completed by a competent person and in line with applicable UK electrical requirements. Waterproof on the label does not mean safe to connect casually outdoors. The supply arrangement, isolator, protective devices and cable route all need to suit the site.

For larger fabricated signs, splitting the LEDs across more than one driver can be smarter than using one oversized unit. It can reduce voltage drop, simplify cable runs and make fault-finding easier. The trade-off is more components and more incoming connections, so it is best used where layout or load genuinely demands it.

Common driver mistakes that create call-backs

The familiar failure points are rarely dramatic at installation. They tend to appear weeks or months later as intermittent illumination, colour variation or one section of a sign going out. Avoid these four errors:

  • Selecting a driver with no wattage headroom, particularly on signs that run every evening.
  • Pairing 12V LEDs with the wrong output voltage or mixing incompatible lighting products on one circuit.
  • Installing a sealed driver but leaving cable joins, entry points or connector blocks exposed to moisture.
  • Hiding the driver in a position that traps heat or makes future servicing needlessly awkward.
There is another point worth checking before ordering: dimming. A standard 12V waterproof driver is usually intended for straightforward on-off operation. If the project needs dimming, timed scenes or a control system, confirm compatibility across the driver, controller and LEDs before fabrication starts. Adding a dimmer later without checking the system can introduce flicker or reduce usable output.

A practical sizing example

Say you are building an externally fitted shop fascia using 50 LED modules rated at 0.72W each. The total load is 36W. A 40W driver is technically close enough on paper, but it is not the comfortable choice for a sign that may operate for long periods in a warm enclosure.

A 60W 12V waterproof driver gives useful capacity without being excessive. The output current capability is 5A, while the module load draws roughly 3A. If the modules extend across a wide fascia, plan cable routes and additional feeds so the far end receives a healthy 12V supply too.

That same approach applies to LED strip. Calculate the full installed length, include every return and feature section, allow headroom, then assess cable distance before choosing the driver and feed arrangement. Measure first. Fit once.

Make the driver part of the sign plan

The driver should be specified at the same time as the modules, strip, cable and connectors - not picked in a rush when the tray is ready to close. That keeps the 12V system matched from end to end and makes installation quicker on site.
