How to Fit LED Strips Evenly in Sign Cabinets

A bright centre with dark edges, visible LED dots or a shadow around the return can make an otherwise tidy sign look unfinished. Knowing how to fit LED strips evenly is what separates a quick install from illumination that looks consistent from the pavement, across the shopfront and after dark.
For sign cabinets, tray signs and internally illuminated lettering, evenness is not just about keeping the strip in a straight line. It comes from planning the spacing, choosing a suitable LED density, preparing the mounting surface and feeding power correctly. Get those fundamentals right before the backing paper comes off.
Start with the sign face, not the LED strip
The depth of the sign cabinet and the material of the face determine how far apart your LED strips can sit. A shallow cabinet needs closer strip spacing or a higher-density strip, because there is less room for the light to spread before it reaches the sign face. A deeper cabinet gives you more tolerance, but it can still show banding if the strips are spaced too widely.
As a practical starting point, measure the cabinet depth from the LED mounting plane to the inside of the face. Then assess the face material. Opal acrylic diffuses light well, while thinner or more translucent faces may reveal individual LEDs more readily. Printed vinyl, coloured acrylic and back-painted faces can also reduce light transmission, so they may need a tighter layout than a plain white opal face.
Do not rely on a generic spacing figure for every job. A 50 mm deep folded tray with a white opal face behaves very differently from a 100 mm deep cabinet with a dark printed face. The safest method is to make a short test section before committing to the full installation.
Plan the layout before you cut or stick
Set out the LED strip arrangement on paper or directly on the cabinet backing. Mark a centreline first, then work outwards with equal spacing on both sides. This prevents a common error: fitting strips from one edge and discovering the final gap is much narrower than the rest.
For a rectangular cabinet, keep the first and last strips an equal distance from the returns. Those outer margins matter. If the LEDs sit too far from the edges, the sign can develop a dull border. If they sit too close, you can create a bright line around the perimeter.
Measure the usable internal width, rather than the overall sign width. Divide that width into equal strip centres, while allowing for the edge margins you need. Mark each run with a pencil, masking tape or a straightedge. On long cabinets, make several marks along every run so the strips do not gradually wander off line.
Allow for obstructions and service access
Drivers, cable entries, braces and fixing points can disrupt an otherwise neat layout. Decide where they sit before fitting the LEDs, not halfway through. Keep strips clear of sharp edges and leave room to inspect connections later.
Where a sign has a central rail or stiffener, mirror the layout either side of it. If a strip must be moved to avoid an obstruction, adjust the neighbouring strips as well so the spacing remains visually balanced. One improvised gap can be more obvious than you expect once the face is fitted.
Choose the right strip for the cabinet depth
LED strip is not a one-size-fits-all light source. LED density, wattage, beam angle and colour temperature all affect the finished appearance. Higher-density strip generally provides a smoother, more even field of light in shallow applications, although it may require more power and produce more heat.
A lower-density strip can work well in deeper sign cabinets, especially where the face is strongly diffused. It is often more economical, but there is a trade-off: push the spacing too far and you may see scalloping or darker lanes between runs.
For most commercial signage, keep the colour temperature consistent across the whole job. Mixing batches or colour temperatures can make individual sections look warmer or cooler, even where spacing is perfect. Use compatible 12 V LED drivers, cable and connectors rated for the load, and check the strip specification before calculating the power supply.
Prepare the mounting surface properly
Evenly spaced strips will not stay even if the adhesive lets go. Cabinet backs can carry dust, swarf, oil, release agents or residue from previous fittings. Clean the mounting surface thoroughly and allow it to dry before installation.
Where the supplied adhesive backing is not enough for the substrate or working conditions, use a suitable high-bond tape such as VHB tape. This is particularly useful on painted metal, powder-coated surfaces and installations subject to temperature changes. Apply firm, even pressure along the full strip length rather than pressing only at the ends.
Avoid stretching LED strip as you fit it. A stretched run can pull back over time, especially near joints or corners. Lay it down in a controlled line, following your marks, and cut only at the designated cut points. Keep every cut end neat and protected where required by the sign design and environment.
How to fit LED strips evenly without visible light bands
Once the layout is marked, fit the middle strip first if the cabinet is symmetrical. Then install matching runs either side, checking the spacing as you go. On a wide cabinet, a long straightedge or laser line saves time and gives a more reliable result than judging by eye.
Keep the strips parallel to the sign edges, but do not assume the cabinet itself is perfectly square. On fabricated trays, measure between your marked lines at several points. If the returns taper slightly, centre the layout visually rather than forcing every strip to follow a distorted edge.
Before wiring permanently, power a few test runs with the face in position where possible. Stand back at the intended viewing distance. The aim is an even face, not simply an even-looking LED layout with the cabinet open. Look for bright edges, dark corners and repeated bands. Adjusting one strip at this stage is straightforward. Doing it after the sign has been installed is not.
Give corners and edges extra attention
Corners are usually the first place a cabinet reveals poor illumination. If the design allows, run the outer strips close enough to support the returns without creating a hotspot. On deeper cabinets, you may need a supplementary short section near a corner or behind a particularly dark graphic area.
Avoid placing cut ends or connector bulges where they will sit directly behind a thin or light-coloured face. These can cast small shadows or create visible marks. Route cables neatly and away from the viewing plane wherever possible.
Wire for equal brightness from end to end
A perfectly laid-out strip can still look uneven if voltage drop is ignored. On longer runs, the LEDs furthest from the driver may appear dimmer than those at the feed point. This is especially noticeable with brighter strips, long cabinets and heavily loaded 12 V systems.
Do not treat one end-feed as the automatic answer for every sign. Short runs may perform well with a single feed, but longer runs often benefit from feeding both ends or using parallel feeds from a suitable distribution point. This helps maintain a consistent voltage along the strip and produces a more even result.
Use appropriately sized LED cable for the current and run length. Undersized cable creates resistance and lost voltage before power even reaches the strip. Keep polarity consistent, use secure connectors or soldered joints where appropriate, and protect all connections from strain. The driver should be selected with sensible headroom rather than run flat out at its maximum rating.
Check that the driver is accessible for future maintenance. Hiding it where it cannot be tested or replaced may save a few minutes during fabrication, but it creates a costly service call later.
Test the face, not just the circuit
Electrical testing confirms that the LEDs work. A visual test confirms that the sign works. With the face fitted, inspect the illumination in a dim workshop or after dusk, when unevenness is easier to spot. View it straight on and from an angle, as customers will.
Look for colour variation, dim ends, visible points, bright borders and shadowing from internal rails. If one area is noticeably different, diagnose the cause before adding more strip. The issue may be a weak power feed, a poorly diffused face, a strip sitting loose from the backing or a cable casting a shadow.
