A sign that looks sharp on the bench can still fail on site for one simple reason - poor wiring. Most sign LED modules used in fabricated trays, light boxes and built-up letters are designed for 12V DC systems. In practical terms, you are not trying to feed power through one long chain of modules back to the driver if that creates voltage drop and uneven brightness.
Before you connect anything, check three basics. First, confirm the module voltage matches the driver output. Second, confirm the total wattage of the run so the driver is properly sized. Third, check the module manufacturer’s maximum run length. That last point matters more than many installers expect. LED modules are polarity-sensitive, so positive to positive and negative to negative is non-negotiable. Most modules are clearly marked, usually with red for positive and black for negative, but never assume. Check the markings on both the modules and the driver output terminals.
Reverse polarity usually will not give you a half-working sign. More often, the run simply will not light. That makes it one of the easier faults to spot, but still an avoidable waste of time.
Wiring layout: series or parallel?
For this type of signage lighting, the answer is almost always parallel. Each module run should receive the same voltage from the driver. That keeps brightness more consistent across the sign and reduces the risk of the last modules appearing weaker than the first.
People sometimes use the word series loosely when they mean modules linked one after another physically. Electrically, that is not the same thing. The modules may be daisy-chained by cable between units, but the overall system is still intended to operate as a low-voltage parallel arrangement within the manufacturer’s specified run length.
If you have a wide tray sign or a large light box, feed from more than one point if needed. This is especially useful where longer cable distances or heavier module counts could introduce voltage drop. Cable choice and connector decisions
Use LED cable suited to the load and the environment. In a small internal sign, short cable runs may not need anything heavy-duty. In a larger fascia or externally mounted unit, undersized cable can cost you brightness and reliability. If in doubt, go up a size rather than trying to save pennies on cable.
Quick clip connectors can speed up assembly and keep things tidy, especially in repeat production. They are useful, but only if they are fitted properly and used in the right application. For signs exposed to vibration, moisture or temperature swings, a poorly seated connector can become the weak point. A secure mechanical and electrical connection is what matters, not just speed on the bench.
Cable routing deserves more attention than it usually gets. Keep runs neat, avoid sharp edges, and do not leave slack where it can rattle around inside the sign. A clean internal layout makes future fault-finding much quicker and reflects better workshop standards.
A practical wiring sequence
A clean workflow reduces mistakes. Start by laying out the modules in the sign face or tray to confirm spacing, illumination pattern and cable reach. Once you are happy with the layout, fix the modules in place using the appropriate method, often the self-adhesive backing supported with VHB tape or another secure fixing where needed.
Next, group the modules into sensible runs based on the manufacturer’s guidance. Do not just keep adding modules because the cable reaches. Plan where each run will connect back to the power feed.

Common mistakes that cause trouble later
The biggest wiring mistake is overloading the driver or pushing module runs beyond the recommended limit. The sign may still illuminate, but brightness can taper off and long-term reliability suffers.
The second is ignoring voltage drop on larger signs. If one side of the tray looks dimmer, the problem is often not the modules themselves but the wiring layout feeding them.
The third is treating all connectors and cable the same. Internal dry-use jobs and exposed external signage do not place the same demands on your installation. Match the connection method to the job, not just what is nearest on the bench.
