IP65 Versus IP67 LED Protection Explained

A sign can look perfect on the bench and still fail early once it meets a British winter. Water tracking through a letter return, spray from pavement cleaning, wind-driven rain and a poorly sealed cable entry all put LED components under pressure. That is why the choice between IP65 versus IP67 LED protection is not a minor product-detail decision. It affects where you can install the lighting, how you build the sign and how many call-backs you avoid.
For most sign makers, the right answer is not simply “buy the higher number”. IP ratings describe specific test conditions, not a blanket promise that a product will survive every outdoor installation. Select the rating for the real exposure, then make sure the rest of the system is built to the same standard.
What an IP rating actually tells you
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The rating is set out under IEC 60529 and uses two digits. The first digit covers protection against solid objects and dust. The second covers protection against water.
Both IP65 and IP67 start with a 6. That means the enclosure is dust-tight. For LED modules, strip and drivers used in signage, this is useful protection against fine debris, workshop dust and contamination finding its way into the housing.
The difference is the second digit. An IP65 product is protected against water jets from any direction. An IP67 product is protected against temporary immersion in water, normally up to one metre for 30 minutes, although the manufacturer’s stated test conditions always take priority.
That distinction catches people out. IP67 is designed to handle temporary submersion. It does not automatically mean it is the best choice for every rain-exposed sign, and it does not mean a finished sign is waterproof once you add cable joints, connectors and a driver.
IP65 versus IP67 LED protection in sign work
Think first about how water will reach the component. A fascia sign mounted high on a shopfront will usually face rain, wind and the occasional wash-down. It is unlikely to sit underwater. LED modules inside a properly made-up tray, or LED strip behind a sealed diffuser, may be well served by IP65 protection if the sign face, returns and cable entries are correctly built.
IP65 is a practical choice where components need to tolerate external weather and direct splashing without being submerged. It can suit face-lit letters, trough lights, retail fascias and many outdoor lightbox builds. The enclosure still needs sensible drainage and a route for any water that gets into the wider sign structure to escape.
IP67 earns its place where temporary pooling or flooding is credible. Consider low-level signs near paving, freestanding displays, illuminated features close to planters, or installations where water can collect inside a base or cable channel. It is also worth considering when a component is exposed to more severe wet conditions during cleaning or where the consequences of moisture ingress are particularly costly.
The trade-off is that IP67 products can be less convenient to cut, reconnect or repair. Waterproofed LED strip is often enclosed in a sleeve or moulded coating. Once cut, its factory protection rating is no longer guaranteed unless the end is resealed using a method designed for that product. The same applies to connectors: a waterproof-looking plug is only as good as its gasket, cable diameter match and installation.
Rain is not immersion
A common assumption is that IP67 is automatically “more waterproof” in every meaningful sense. The tests are different. IP65 deals with water jets, while IP67 deals with temporary immersion. Neither rating should be treated as proof that an item can remain permanently underwater, withstand high-pressure jet washing, or survive years of water sitting against badly fitted seals.
For normal weather exposure, build quality often matters more than stepping up one rating. A well-drained IP65 installation with protected cable entries can outlast an IP67 component fitted into a sealed box that traps condensation.
The rating on the LED is only one part of the job
Sign lighting systems fail at the joins more often than at the LED chip itself. If you specify IP67 modules but use an open connector, untinned joint or non-rated cable gland outside the protected area, water will still find the weak point.
Assess the full run: LED modules or strip, cable, connectors, joints, driver enclosure and the point where the cable enters the sign. Every component exposed to the same environment needs appropriate protection. A waterproof 12V LED driver is useful only if its mains connection, low-voltage cable route and mounting position are also protected from water and mechanical damage.
This is particularly relevant on built-up letters. The illuminated face might shed rain effectively, but water can enter around mounting studs, drain into a return, or wick along a cable. Put cable exits where they are less exposed, use suitable glands or grommets, and avoid creating a low point where water gathers around a joint.
Do not rely on silicone as a cure for poor design. Sealant has a role, but it can conceal a route for water without stopping it, and it can make future servicing harder. Good drainage, sensible cable routing and mechanically secure connections are the foundations.
Choose by installation, not by label
Before ordering, ask where the LED assembly will sit rather than whether the finished sign is described as “outdoor”. Outdoor covers a wide range of conditions.
An internally lit shop fascia with a weathering face and a sheltered cable path may only require IP65 LED modules. A bar sign beneath a canopy could be similarly straightforward, although heat and ventilation still matter. A low-mounted sign beside a pedestrian route, where standing water and aggressive cleaning are likely, is a stronger case for IP67-rated components and carefully protected connections.
For indoor work, the calculation can change again. An IP-rated product may be useful in kitchens, washrooms, poolside areas or dusty workshops, but it is not automatically necessary for a dry internal letter set. Paying for protection you do not need can add cost and make installation less flexible. On the other hand, using unprotected strip in a damp hospitality setting is false economy.
There is also a difference between protection from water and suitability for the electrical environment. Check the voltage, driver loading, cable length and heat management alongside the IP rating. A sealed LED strip can run warmer than an open version, especially in a tight acrylic letter or shallow profile. Excess heat shortens LED life, so leave enough capacity in the driver and provide ventilation where the sign construction allows it.
How to avoid rating mistakes on site
Start with the manufacturer’s specification, not the product name. Confirm that the IP rating applies to the exact item you are buying, including its supplied leads. Some products are rated for the body only, while the cable ends require additional protection after installation.
If you cut LED strip, treat the cut point as an exposed component. Use the correct end cap, sealant and connector arrangement for that strip type, then allow any sealing material to cure fully before energising. A quick repair with tape may get a test section working, but it is not a professional external finish.
Keep drivers accessible where possible. A driver hidden in a damp, unventilated void is difficult to diagnose and replace, regardless of its stated IP rating. Mount it securely, keep it clear of standing water and allow a practical route for future inspection.
Finally, test before closing the sign. Check polarity, voltage at the furthest modules, joints and illumination before fitting faces or sealing returns. Once a lightbox is on the wall, a ten-minute check becomes a much more expensive fault visit.
A practical rule for sign makers
Use IP65 where LEDs need dependable defence against dust, rain and splashing. Specify IP67 where temporary immersion or water pooling is a realistic possibility. Then protect the joints, cable entries and power supply with the same care as the light source.
