LED Drivers: Choosing the Right Power for Signs

An illuminated sign can have excellent LEDs, tidy returns and first-class vinyl, yet still fail early because the power supply was treated as an afterthought. LED drivers are the part that turns a good-looking sign into a dependable installation - or an expensive call-back waiting to happen.
For sign makers, the job is not simply to find a driver with enough watts. You need the right output type, voltage, loading margin, environment rating and cable arrangement for the sign in front of you. Get those decisions right at the bench and installation becomes quicker, cleaner and far less likely to cause trouble later.
What LED drivers do in a sign
An LED driver regulates the electrical supply sent to the LEDs. In everyday signage language, a waterproof 12V LED driver is often also called a power supply or transformer, although it is not the same kind of transformer used in older lighting systems.
Most LED modules and standard LED strip used in sign fabrication are constant-voltage products. They need a stable 12V DC output. The driver takes the incoming mains supply and converts it to that controlled 12V output, allowing the modules or strip to operate as designed.
The other main category is a constant-current driver. These are common with certain LED fittings, downlights and specialist LED boards. They are selected by output current, such as 350mA or 700mA, and by a voltage range. They are not interchangeable with a 12V constant-voltage driver.
That distinction matters. Connecting a 12V LED module system to a constant-current unit can damage the LEDs or prevent the system working properly. Start with the specification of the LED product, then choose the driver to match it. Never work backwards from a driver already sitting on the shelf.
Choosing LED drivers by voltage and wattage
For a 12V signage system, the output voltage is straightforward: use a regulated 12V DC driver. Wattage needs a little more thought.
Every LED module or strip has a power consumption, usually shown in watts per module, watts per metre or watts per run. Add the total load for the sign, then select a driver with sensible spare capacity. A practical trade rule is to allow around 20% headroom rather than running a driver flat out continuously.
For example, if a built-up letter set uses 48W in total, a 60W driver gives a more comfortable margin than a 50W unit. If the calculated load is 96W, step up to a 120W driver rather than trying to make a 100W driver do all the work. This helps the driver run cooler and gives breathing room for normal variations in LED load.
Do not oversize blindly, either. A much larger driver may be physically awkward, cost more than necessary and complicate where it can be installed. The right choice is the smallest suitably rated unit that meets the load requirement with headroom and fits the practical constraints of the job.
When a sign has several sections, calculate the full connected load, not only the brightest face or the longest letter. This includes halo-lit returns, tray illumination and any internal strip. A quick power calculation before production is cheaper than diagnosing dim sections on site.
The real issue behind dim LEDs: voltage drop
A driver can be perfectly sized and still produce uneven illumination if the 12V cable run is too long or too light. Low-voltage systems are particularly sensitive to voltage drop. As cable length increases, resistance increases, and the LEDs furthest from the driver may receive less voltage than those closest to it.
The result is familiar: the first letters look sharp, while the far end of the fascia appears weaker or warmer in colour. On white LEDs, that inconsistency is especially noticeable.
Keep low-voltage runs as short as the build allows, use appropriate cable for the load and distribute power intelligently. On longer runs of LED strip, feed power at more than one point where required. For larger signs, splitting the load across separate feeds from the driver can give a much more even result than daisy-chaining every module in one long route.
This is also where a neat wiring plan pays off. Mark the driver location, cable paths and feed points before the sign is closed up. The shortest route is not always the best route if it leaves no access for testing or future replacement.
IP ratings and driver location
The enclosure rating must match the environment, not the product description on the quotation. A driver installed inside a dry, ventilated sign tray has different needs from one mounted outdoors, behind a fascia or in a location exposed to rain and wash-down.
For exposed or damp applications, use a suitably rated waterproof 12V driver and install it in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. An IP rating refers to protection against ingress, but it does not make poor installation good installation. Cable entries, joints, mounting position and condensation all still matter.
Avoid placing a driver where water can sit around it, where it will be trapped in a completely sealed unventilated void, or where it cannot be reached without dismantling the entire sign. Drivers generate heat in normal use. They need the clearance and ventilation specified for the product.
It is worth thinking about service access during fabrication. A driver mounted behind a removable panel or within an accessible return is far easier to replace than one buried behind permanently fixed sign elements. The few minutes saved during assembly can become hours on a future maintenance visit.
Dimming, controls and compatibility
If the sign needs dimming, timers, sensors or remote control, check compatibility before ordering. Not every 12V driver is dimmable, and dimming methods vary. A dimmer designed for a constant-voltage LED system must be suitable for the driver and the connected LED load.
Problems often show up as flicker, a limited dimming range, buzzing or LEDs that refuse to switch fully off. These are compatibility issues, not necessarily faulty parts. The driver, dimmer and LED product need to be considered as one system.
For straightforward static signage, a standard non-dimmable 12V driver is usually the cleanest option. For hospitality work, feature walls or signs that need reduced brightness after hours, controls can add real value - but only when they are specified properly from the outset.
Installation details that prevent call-backs
Good driver selection is only half the job. Reliable connections and sensible commissioning are what finish it.
Use connectors and cable rated for the application, observe polarity on the 12V side and keep all joints secure. A reversed polarity connection may stop the LEDs working, while a loose connection can create intermittent faults that are frustrating to trace once the sign is fitted.
Before closing the sign, test the complete system under load. Check every letter, inspect the brightness across the full face and look for cable tension, exposed conductor or connections sitting where moisture may collect. If a driver has multiple output terminals, make sure the distribution arrangement remains within its stated rating.
Mains-side connections should be made safely and in accordance with the driver instructions and applicable electrical requirements. Where fixed mains wiring or site electrical work is involved, use a competent electrician. A professional sign installation should never rely on guesswork at either the mains or low-voltage end.
A better way to specify power
The best driver choice starts with a short list of facts: the LED type, operating voltage, total wattage, planned cable runs, environment and any control requirement. That takes minutes to establish and removes most of the uncertainty.
